What is a Tree Protection Plan?

The ‘Tree Protection Plan’ (TPP) typically forms an integral part of the ‘Arboricultural Impact Assessment’ (AIA) but can also be provided as a separate and condensed report/plan.

This report is then submitted by you or your representative to Council with your development application (DA).

Arboricultural Compliancy Stages & Reporting for Developments

In order to ensure that protection measures are being adhered to during the pre-construction, construction and post-construction stages, a random weekly site inspection MUST be carried out by the Project Arborist throughout duration of works. Matters to be monitored and reported should include tree condition, tree protection measures and impact of site works which may arise from changes to the approved plans.

If there is non-compliance with tree protection measures or if trees have been damaged, a timeframe for compliance and remedial works should be specified by the Project Arborist. The determining authority (Port Macquarie Hastings Council) must be notified of non-compliance issues.

How long does it take to prepare a Tree Protection Plan?

Preparing a Tree Protection Plan typically takes between 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the site and the number of trees involved. This timeframe allows for a thorough assessment of the trees, including their condition, root zones, and potential impacts from proposed activities. If additional consultations, surveys, or revisions are needed, the process may take longer. Expedited services can often be arranged for an additional fee if a quicker turnaround is required.

How do we calculate and establish a TPZ?

The tree protection distance method outlined in the current Australian Standard AS 4970 ‘Protection of Trees on Development Sites’ will be used for the allocation of tree protection zones.
The TPZ for individual trees is calculated based on trunk (stem) diameter (DBH), measured at 1.4 metres above ground level.
The radius of the TPZ is calculated by multiplying the tree’s DBH by 12. For example; a tree with 100cm DBH requires a TPZ of 12 metres. The method provides a TPZ that addresses both tree stability and growth requirements.
TPZ distances are measured as a radius from the centre of the trunk at ground level.
